Mumbai: Bollywood playback singer Sonu Nigam is at the center of a major controversy after his remarks about the Kannada language during a recent concert in Bengaluru triggered outrage, an FIR, and a sweeping industry boycott.

What Triggered the Controversy?

During a concert at East Point Engineering College, a group of attendees repeatedly demanded that Nigam sing in Kannada. The singer, visibly frustrated, compared the aggressive insistence to divisive behavior, referencing the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. He argued that language should not be used to intimidate or divide, stating, “When terrorists attacked in Pahalgam, no one was asked about their language.”

Nigam later clarified that he had prepared an hour-long set of Kannada songs and had always shown respect for the language and culture. However, he said he felt threatened and humiliated by the manner of the demands, especially coming from someone as young as his son.

FIR and Industry Backlash

Following the incident, the Kannada Rakshana Vedike filed an FIR against Nigam, accusing him of making “objectionable and emotionally provocative” statements that hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas and incited linguistic discord. The Bengaluru police have summoned Nigam for questioning, and forensic experts are analyzing video footage from the concert to verify the authenticity and context of his remarks.

In response, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) announced a total boycott of Sonu Nigam, barring him from all professional engagements in the Kannada film industry until he issued an unconditional public apology.

Sonu Nigam’s Apology and Clarification

Amid mounting pressure, Sonu Nigam posted a heartfelt apology on Instagram, writing, “Sorry Karnataka. My love for you is bigger than my ego. Love you always.” The post quickly went viral, with fans expressing a mix of support and disappointment.

Nigam reiterated his affection for Karnataka and Kannada music, emphasizing that he has always celebrated the language in his performances. He also stated that he would respect the verdict of the people and authorities of Karnataka, pledging full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
