Pathanamthitta: The world-renowned Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple in Kerala has officially opened its doors for the eagerly awaited annual Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season. Thousands of devotees, who have long awaited this spiritual journey, can now ascend the sacred hill to offer prayers.
Devotees were granted entry to climb the holy hill starting at 1 PM today, with darshan commencing at 3 AM on Saturday. Outgoing Melsanthi (chief priest) P.N. Mahesh Namboothiri performed the ceremonial opening of the temple’s sanctum sanctorum at 5 PM on Friday, marking the formal beginning of the season.
Extended Hours and Virtual Queue System
The temple will remain open for 18 hours daily throughout the season, accommodating an increasing number of pilgrims. To ensure a seamless experience, a virtual queue system allows up to 70,000 devotees to pre-book their slots each day. Additionally, 10,000 more slots are available via on-the-spot bookings at designated counters in Pampa, Erumeli, and Vadiperiyar.
Safety and Comfort: Preparations in Full Swing
Kerala Police, along with other state authorities, have implemented robust measures to ensure the safety and convenience of pilgrims. State Police Chief Sheikh Darvesh Sahib, after reviewing arrangements in key pilgrimage hubs such as Pampa, Sannidhanam, and Nilakkal, emphasized the police’s role in facilitating a smooth darshan experience.
Key measures include:
- Emergency Operation Centers: Established in Sannidhanam, Nilakkal, and Pampa, staffed by 299 personnel, including duty and executive magistrates.
- Enhanced Personnel Deployment: 144 employees stationed at Pampa, 160 at Nilakkal, and others across critical points.
- Edathavalam Facility: A rest point for air travelers at Kochi International Airport, inaugurated by State Industry and Law Minister P. Rajeev, ensuring a convenient transit for devotees.
The Revenue Department is also playing a crucial role, ensuring essential services and emergency support are readily available throughout the pilgrimage.
