New Delhi: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings for 2024 were announced today, and the comprehensive list can be accessed on the NIRF’s official website at nirfindia.org. This year’s rankings showcase the continued excellence and rising competition among Indian institutions.

Key Highlights:

  • Participation Surge: This year saw remarkable participation from 10,885 institutions, marking a 200% increase from the inaugural edition in 2016.
  • IIT Madras Continues Dominance: IIT Madras retains its top spot for the sixth consecutive year in both the ‘Overall’ and ‘Engineering’ categories. It has held the number one position in the engineering sector since NIRF’s inception in 2016.
  • AIIMS Delhi & IIM Ahmedabad: AIIMS Delhi has been the leader in the Medical category for seven years, while IIM Ahmedabad has consistently been the top institution in Management for five years running.
  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc): IISc Bengaluru remains the premier university, maintaining its first-place ranking in the university category and securing the second spot in the overall category.

New Categories and Criteria Changes:

  • New Categories Added: The 2024 rankings introduced three new categories: Open Universities, Skill Universities, and State Public Universities. Previously, the categories included Overall, Colleges, Universities, and Research Institutions.
  • Revised Criteria: Significant changes include the adjustment of the faculty-to-student ratio for medical colleges from 1:15 to 1:10, and for state-funded government institutes from 1:20 to 1:15.
  • Upcoming Addition: Anil Sahasrabuddhe, Chairman of the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), announced that a Sustainability Ranking will be introduced next year, reflecting the increasing focus on carbon neutrality and sustainability.
