Kathmandu: Heavy monsoon rains have unleashed chaos in western Nepal, resulting in devastating landslides. On Saturday, two separate landslides claimed seven lives. In Malika Rural Municipality of Gulmi district, tragedy struck when a house was swept away, claiming the lives of five family members. Local officials have confirmed the incident.
Municipality Chairman Devi Ram Aryan attributed the landslides to the relentless downpours. Fortunately, all the bodies swept away have been recovered. Meanwhile, in Fedikhola Rural Municipality of Syangja district, a mother and daughter lost their lives in another landslide. Notably, Nepal’s monsoon season began on June 10, and the death toll from weather-related incidents has now reached 34.
Adding to the grim situation, a road accident in southern Nepal resulted in the deaths of two Indian nationals. The victims, Tamanna Sheikh (35) and Irfan Alam (21) hailed from East Champaran district in Bihar. According to Nepal Police, their car plunged off a mountain road in the Chandranigahpur section along the East-West Highway. This tragedy echoes a similar incident in March, when a passenger bus plunged into a river in Bagmati province, claiming seven lives and injuring 30 others.
