New Delhi: The eagerly awaited counseling session for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 was slated to begin on July 6. However, it has now been deferred until further notice. Here are the key updates:
- Postponement and Pending Dates:
- The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) had originally scheduled NEET-UG counseling to commence on July 6. However, due to recent developments, the process has been put on hold. The exact date for resuming counseling is yet to be announced.
- An official source revealed that the counseling will kick off once the process of issuing permission letters to medical colleges concludes. This ensures that seats in new colleges can be allocated during the initial rounds of counseling.
- Keep an eye on the MCC’s official website at mcc.nic.in for fresh updates on NEET UG 2024 counseling dates.
- Supreme Court’s Stance:
- Last month, the Supreme Court rejected a petition seeking a delay in the counseling process. The court emphasized that canceling the NEET-UG 2024 exam without concrete evidence of confidentiality breaches would adversely impact honest candidates.
- The hearing on July 8, presided over by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, will address 26 petitions related to NEET-UG. The court’s decision will likely determine the revised counseling schedule.
- Protests and Allegations:
- The NEET-UG exam, held on May 5, witnessed participation from approximately 23 lakh candidates across 4,750 examination centers in 571 cities.
- Irregularities, including question paper leaks, sparked protests in various cities. Opposition parties raised concerns, leading to legal cases being filed.
- Agency Reforms:
- Amid public outrage over alleged irregularities, Subodh Singh was removed from the post of NTA Director General.
- A high-level committee, led by former ISRO chief R Radhakrishnan, has been tasked with ensuring transparent, smooth, and fair conduct of NEET-UG and other exams.
- CBI Investigation:
- NEET-UG faces scrutiny over multiple irregularities. Additionally, the University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) was canceled due to compromised sanctity.
- Both cases are now under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
