Mumbai: In a tragic turn of events, the Ghatkopar area of Mumbai was ravaged by a severe storm accompanied by heavy rainfall on Monday. The inclement weather led to the collapse of a colossal iron hoarding at a petrol station, resulting in a significant loss of life and numerous injuries. The death toll has alarmingly risen to 14, while at least 74 individuals have sustained injuries due to the incident. Rescue operations are actively underway as efforts to locate and assist potential survivors continue.
The hoarding in question, which stood along the bustling Eastern Express Highway in Pant Nagar, was erected without proper authorization from the municipal authorities. Its fall caused widespread chaos and destruction at a time when the petrol station was frequented by many. Notably, the hoarding measured an expansive 17,040 square feet, earning it a place in the Limca Book of Records as the largest billboard of its kind.
In response to the disaster, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, promptly assessed the situation. He has declared a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the bereaved families of those who perished in the calamity. Furthermore, it has been assured that the state government will shoulder the medical expenses for the treatment of those injured during this unfortunate event.
The incident has raised concerns over the structural integrity and regulatory compliance of public installations, prompting a reevaluation of safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
