Brasilia: Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn in as Brazil’s President on Sunday. In his first address after taking office, Lula da Silva stressed getting the country back on track and vowed to hold members of his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro’s administration accountable for their actions. In the lower house of Congress, Lula da Silva said, “Our message to Brazil is one of hope and reconstruction. This great edifice of rights, sovereignty, and development has been badly damaged in recent years. We will do everything possible to make it stand again.
Thousands of supporters of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, dressed in red to reflect his Workers’ Party, cheered after he was sworn in on Sunday. Lula said he would send a report about the former administration to all lawmakers and judicial officials. Will cancel Bolsonaro’s “criminal decrees” and hold him accountable for his poor strategy against the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We do not seek revenge against those who tried to bring the country under their personal and ideological agenda, but we are going to ensure rule of law,” he said.
Significantly, Lula defeated Bolsonaro in the elections held on October 30, after which many of his supporters took to the streets across the country and refused to accept the election results. Supporters of Bolsonaro also clashed violently with the police on several occasions.
