Srinagar: Intense discussions and a charged atmosphere marked today’s proceedings in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, as lawmakers clashed over a proposal to restore the special status of the former state. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary introduced a resolution advocating for the reinstatement of Article 370, which was revoked by the central government on August 5, 2019. Despite opposition, the Assembly passed a resolution calling on the Center to engage in talks with elected representatives to explore the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
The resolution, introduced by Chaudhary, highlighted the significance of the special status, stating, “This Assembly reaffirms the importance of special status and constitutional guarantees that safeguarded the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.” The resolution expressed concern over the “unilateral removal” of Article 370, emphasizing the need to consider “national unity and the legitimate aspirations of the people” in any discussion on restoring autonomy.
This call for restoration met with fierce opposition from BJP members, led by Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, who argued the proposal was “not part of the listed agenda,” which initially included discussions on the Lieutenant Governor’s address. Sharma, representing the BJP’s stance, dismissed the resolution, stating, “We reject the proposal. This Assembly was to focus on other pressing matters outlined in the agenda.”
The debate has grown heated since Monday, when People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Waheed Para also introduced a proposal opposing the 2019 abrogation of Article 370. Para’s proposal created a stir, sparking further calls from lawmakers for an open discussion on Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional status. Both the PDP and National Conference have rallied for the Center to consider reinstating the protections and rights once guaranteed to the region under Article 370.
In response, Assembly leaders have stressed the significance of local representation in discussions with the Center. Today’s resolution underscores a collective appeal from local leaders for recognition of Jammu and Kashmir’s unique cultural and historical identity in national policies, highlighting both the deep-rooted sentiments and ongoing political complexities surrounding the Article 370 debate.
