London: The much-awaited Monitoring Board of Facebook will start functioning from October. This board will decide whether any specific type of content should be placed on the Facebook platform. Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive officer (CEO) of the social media company, announced the establishment of such a semi-independent board two years ago.

He made the announcement after severe criticism for not being able to work fast enough to remove misinformation, hate speech and malicious enhancing campaigns. Facebook said in a statement on Thursday, “We are currently testing new technology systems deployed that will allow users to appeal and the board to review cases.”

The board said that if these tests proceed according to plan, by the end of October, it will start accepting the users’ appeals and reviewing the cases. Earlier, the board was expected to start operations in early 2020, but it was delayed due to some reasons.

The board said, “Creating a process that is completely theoretical and globally effective takes time and our members are working aggressively to start operations as soon as possible.”

The board is a multinational group of 20 members, consisting of legal scholars, human rights experts and journalists. The board’s decision and the company’s responses will be public.
