Beijing: China will build a major dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet and a related proposal has been considered in the 14th Five Year Plan to be implemented from next year. The official media of China has given this information quoting the head of a Chinese company who has been given the responsibility of building the dam.
According to the Global Times, Yang Jiong, chairman of the Power Construction Corporation of China, said that China would “start a hydropower project in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River (the Tibetan name for the Brahmaputra).” And this project can help strengthen water resources and home security.
The Global Times quoted an article on the V-chat account of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China on Sunday as saying that Yang had said that the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) was the 14th party in the country. It has considered including this project in the proposals for preparation of Five Year Plan (2021-25) and achieving long term goals through it by 2035.
Detailed information about the scheme is expected to come out next year after it is formally ratified by the National People’s Congress (NPC). The river Brahmaputra passes through India and Bangladesh. In such a situation, the proposal for construction of a dam has raised the concerns of both the countries. However, China has dismissed these concerns, saying it would also consider their interests.
The Government of India has been regularly communicating its views and concerns to the Chinese authorities and India has urged China to ensure that the activities taking place in the upper reaches of the river do not harm the interests of the countries involved in the lower reaches. .
