The International Cricket Council, the governing body for global cricket, has officially unveiled its annual team rankings for 2026. The results highlight a period of sustained excellence for the Indian national team, which has successfully defended its top ranking in both shorter formats of the game.

In the T20I category, the squad led by Suryakumar Yadav, often referred to as ‘Surya and Co.’, continues to set the benchmark. India has secured the number one position for the second consecutive year, boasting a formidable 275 rating points. This creates a significant cushion over the second-placed English side, which holds 262 points. Australia, the ‘Kangaroos’, follows closely in third place with 258 points, reflecting a highly competitive tier at the top of the shortest format.

ODI Hierarchy and Regional Shifts

India’s dominance extends to the 50-over format, where the ‘Blue Army’ remains the top-ranked team in the world. With 118 rating points, India leads the table despite a minor one-point dip from their previous standing. The battle for the remaining podium spots remains intense, with New Zealand occupying the second position at 113 points and Australia taking third with 109 points.

One of the most notable shifts in the ODI rankings involves the mid-tier powerhouses. South Africa has successfully overtaken Pakistan to claim the fourth spot, leaving the Pakistani side in fifth. Further down the ladder, the rankings see Afghanistan in 7th, followed by England, Bangladesh, and the West Indies, who round out the top ten. This reshuffle comes amidst a busy international calendar where South Africa’s consistent series wins have finally reflected in their numerical standing.

Australia Rules the Test Arena

While India rules the limited-overs formats, the traditional and longest version of the game, Test cricket, remains under the firm control of Australia. The Australian team sits comfortably at the top of the standings with 131 rating points, a testament to their recent successes in high-profile series and the World Test Championship cycle.

The Test rankings have seen significant movement behind the leaders. South Africa has moved into the second position with 119 points, pushing India into third. Team India, having gained one position recently, now holds 104 rating points, narrowly edging out England, who has slipped to fourth with 102 points.

In the lower half of the Test standings, Pakistan has seen a positive trend, overtaking Sri Lanka to reach 89 rating points. The bottom of the elite top ten is currently occupied by the West Indies, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe, respectively. As teams look toward the remainder of the 2026 season, these rankings will play a crucial role in determining seedings and qualification paths for upcoming ICC global events.
