New Delhi: The violent turmoil in Bangladesh has now extended its impact to the Indian borders. In response to the escalating situation, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has heightened security measures, sealing the borders and preparing for any potential emergency.

BSF Issues High Alert Across India-Bangladesh Border

In a proactive move, the BSF issued a ‘high alert’ for all its units along the extensive 4,096 km India-Bangladesh border on Monday. This decision follows an inspection of the Sundarban area by top BSF officials, who deemed it necessary to enhance vigilance and security. Acting Director General (DG) Daljit Singh Chaudhary and senior commanders have reached Kolkata to oversee the security preparations firsthand.

Security Review and Deployment Intensified

The BSF’s Director General reviewed security arrangements in North 24 Parganas district and the Sundarban area, leading to immediate action. “All field commanders have been instructed to deploy all personnel on duty at the border without delay,” a senior official told PTI-Bhasha. According to a BSF spokesperson from the South Bengal Frontier at Kolkata headquarters, the number of soldiers deployed at the border has been significantly increased in light of the changed situation in Bangladesh.

Personnel Leaves Canceled, Full Alert Ordered

With the widespread protests in Bangladesh showing no signs of abating, the BSF has taken stringent measures. All leaves for personnel stationed along the border have been canceled, and units have been ordered to maintain full alert status. The BSF, responsible for securing India’s eastern border, is ensuring that all potential threats are addressed promptly.

States Sharing Borders with Bangladesh

India’s eastern border, shared by five states, is now under heightened surveillance. West Bengal shares a 2,217 km border with Bangladesh, followed by Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Assam (262 km), and Mizoram (318 km). The situation is particularly sensitive following reports that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country amid massive protests against her government.

Ensuring Border Security Amid Regional Instability

As the unrest in Bangladesh continues to unfold, the BSF’s robust response aims to prevent any spillover effects on Indian territory. The coordinated efforts by the BSF’s top brass highlight the seriousness with which India is treating the potential threats arising from its neighbor’s political instability. The Indian government remains vigilant, closely monitoring the developments to ensure national security and stability.
