New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday fixed a dress code for law interns in courts across the city. Under this, every law intern will have to follow the dress code of a white shirt, black pants, and black tie to come to any court in Delhi. The High Court also said that the lawyers appearing before any court will have to wear white bands along with the prescribed dress. The dress code prescribed for lawyers is a white shirt, black pants, and a black lawyer’s gown with a white band.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Justice Pratibha M Singh of the Delhi High Court said that it is clarified that lawyers appearing in any court, from civil courts to the Supreme Court in the city, have to wear white bands along with the prescribed dress. Will happen. While interns can come to the court wearing black ties, black pants, and white shirts as prescribed by the Bar Council of Delhi. This instruction of Justice Singh came during the hearing on the petition of second-year law student Hardik Kapoor. Who challenged a circular issued in November 2022 by the Shahdara Bar Association (SBA). The dress code of a white shirt, black trousers, and a blue coat was fixed for law interns.

On December 1, 2022, the High Court stayed the implementation of that circular. The High Court asked the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD), the Bar Council of India (BCI), and all bar associations to hold a meeting on December 12 to give suggestions on the uniform dress code for interns. On Thursday, the counsel appearing for the SBA told the High Court that there is a contradiction between the dress code for lawyers under the rules laid down by the BCI and Rule 27 of the Legal Education Rules, 2008, which prescribes the dress code for interns. The lawyer also told the High Court that a large number of lawyers wear a black tie instead of a band in court.
