Gangtok: In the wake of devastating landslides and relentless rain in Sikkim, a massive rescue operation has successfully brought safety to 1225 tourists trapped in the Lachung area and other parts of Mangan district. Despite the challenging conditions, the relentless efforts of rescue teams have ensured the safety of many, even as they mourn the loss of at least six lives to this natural calamity.
The rescue mission, which unfolded over two days, saw tourists being evacuated on Tuesday, with hopes to clear the remaining stranded visitors by Wednesday, weather permitting. Vishnu Lama, Additional District Magistrate (ADM), spearheaded the operation with precision and care.
Preparedness was key, as six helicopters stood at the ready at Bagdogra airport in West Bengal for any emergency airlifts. Monday’s efforts saw 64 individuals rescued and transported to Mangan’s district headquarters. Lama stated, “By road today, we’ve managed to bring a total of 1225 tourists from Lachung and its vicinity to Mangan.”
Mangan district, a hub for attractions like Gurudongmar Lake and Yunthang Valley, witnessed its tourists reaching Gangtok safely. They were facilitated by vehicles from the Motor Vehicle Division of the Transport Department for their journeys home.
The evacuation process is ongoing, with officials from various departments including the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police Sonam Dechu Bhutia, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local panchayats, and other personnel all contributing to the rescue efforts.
The landslide has caused significant damage to infrastructure and homes in North Sikkim, isolating most parts from the main areas. Reports indicate nine fatalities since Thursday’s disaster, although official confirmation on the death toll is pending.
As operations continue, Sikkim stands resilient in the face of adversity, with its people united in response to this monsoon’s wrath.
