Dispur: The Brahmaputra River has once again unleashed havoc in Assam, transforming the plains into vast, treacherous expanses of water. The catastrophic flooding has caused widespread devastation, submerging farmers’ fields and bringing life to a standstill in numerous districts across the state.
Rising Death Toll Amidst Severe Flooding
The flood situation remains dire, with an official bulletin reporting the tragic deaths of eight more people on Sunday. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed that the fatalities included two each in Dhubri and Nalbari, and one each in Cachar, Goalpara, Dhemaji, and Shivsagar. This brings the total death toll from floods, landslides, and storms this year to a staggering 78.
Widespread Impact: Over 22 Lakh People Affected
The floods have wreaked havoc on a massive scale, impacting 22,74,289 people across 28 districts. Dhubri is the hardest hit, with 7,54,791 people affected. The relentless waters have forced 53,689 people to seek refuge in 269 relief camps scattered throughout the state.
Rivers Breach Danger Marks
The Brahmaputra River continues to flow perilously above the danger mark in Nematighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri. Several other rivers, including the Burhidihing in Khowang, Dikhow in Shivsagar, Disang in Nangalmurghat, Dhansiri in Numaligarh, Kopili in Dharamtul, Beki in Barpeta, Sankosh in Golakganj, Barak in BP Ghat, and Kushiyara in Karimganj, have also breached their danger levels, exacerbating the crisis.
Chief Minister’s On-Ground Inspection
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma personally visited flood-affected areas on Sunday, touring relief camps in Kamrup district. During his visit, the Chief Minister assessed the conditions and facilities provided to the displaced people. At the LP School relief camp in Nahira, he interacted with residents and instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup to ensure the fulfillment of daily needs, with particular attention to the requirements of children and the elderly.
As Assam grapples with one of its worst flood crises, the resilience and spirit of its people shine through, even as they face unprecedented challenges. The state continues to mobilize resources and efforts to provide relief and support to those in need.
