New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi Marlena is poised to create history by becoming the youngest Chief Minister of Delhi. At 43, she will also be the third woman to hold this prestigious position, following in the footsteps of Congress’ Sheila Dikshit and BJP’s Sushma Swaraj.
A New Era for Delhi
Delhi is set to welcome its third woman Chief Minister with Atishi Marlena’s appointment. She will succeed Arvind Kejriwal, who proposed her name as his successor during a meeting with party MLAs. The proposal was unanimously accepted, paving the way for Atishi to take the helm.
Youngest Chief Minister
Atishi will not only be the youngest Chief Minister of Delhi but also the second sitting woman Chief Minister in India, alongside Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal. Sheila Dikshit, who served as Delhi’s Chief Minister for 15 years from 1998 to 2013, was 60 when she took office. Sushma Swaraj, on the other hand, served a brief tenure of 52 days in 1998 at the age of 46.
A Leader with Multiple Portfolios
Currently, Atishi holds the maximum number of portfolios in the Delhi Cabinet, including Finance, Water, Education, Public Works, Electricity, Revenue, Planning, Services, Law, Vigilance, and other key departments. Her extensive experience and dedication have earned her this significant role.
Recognition for Her Contributions
Atishi has been instrumental in maintaining the stability of the Aam Aadmi Party, especially during challenging times when Kejriwal and other senior leaders were in jail. Her leadership, along with other party members, ensured the party’s continued functioning. Kejriwal’s resignation, submitted to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, has paved the way for Atishi’s appointment.
A New Government in the Making
Party leader Gopal Rai confirmed that Atishi has staked her claim to form a new government in Delhi during a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Saxena. Sheila Dikshit remains a significant figure in Delhi’s political history, having led the Congress to three consecutive electoral victories and serving as the longest-serving woman Chief Minister in the country.
Atishi’s rise to this position marks a new chapter in Delhi’s political landscape, promising fresh leadership and continued progress for the capital city.
