Indians Falling Short on Essential Nutrients

New Delhi: Maintaining a balanced diet is crucial for good health, but neglecting it can have serious consequences. A recent health report highlights significant nutritional deficiencies among Indians compared to their global counterparts. The report reveals that people of all age groups in India are not consuming enough iron, calcium, folate, and other vital micronutrients. Let’s delve into the details of this concerning study.

Key Findings of the Study

A new study published in ‘The Lancet Global Health’ has brought these issues to light. This groundbreaking research is the first to estimate the inadequate consumption of 15 essential micronutrients across 185 countries, based on daily diets without supplements. The study was conducted by a team of researchers from prestigious institutions, including Harvard University.

Gender Disparities in Nutrient Intake

The study shows that approximately 70% of the global population, over five billion people, do not consume adequate amounts of iodine, vitamin E, and calcium. It also highlights a gender disparity: more women than men are deficient in iodine, vitamin B12, and iron, while more men than women lack sufficient magnesium, vitamin B6, zinc, and vitamin C. In India, the number of women with inadequate iodine intake is higher than men, whereas more men are deficient in zinc and magnesium.

Detailed Figures from the Report

Researchers analyzed data from the ‘Global Dietary Database’ to estimate nutrient intake levels in 99.3% of the global population. They found that inadequate calcium consumption is most prevalent among individuals aged 10 to 30, particularly in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. The study’s findings aim to help health professionals identify and target those most in need of dietary interventions.

This comprehensive report underscores the urgent need for improved dietary habits and nutritional awareness in India to ensure better health outcomes for all.
