Pritam Singh of Indian origin becomes first leader of opposition in Singapore

Singapore: Pritam Singh, the leader of Indian origin in Singapore, created history as he took over as the first leader of the Opposition here. Parliament on Monday entrusted this responsibility to him. Singh’s Workers Party emerged as the largest opposition in Singapore’s parliamentary history, winning 10 out of 93 seats in the July 10 general election.

At the beginning of the session, Leader of the House Indrani Raja formally recognized 43-year-old Singh as the first Leader of the Opposition in the country. Indrani Raja of Indian origin is the leader of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). The PAP has a majority in the House with 83 members. According to Channel News Asia, Singh will now sit in front of Prime Minister Lee Hsin Long. Singh in his speech underlined the need to pay attention to foreigners and the circumstances in which they are living.

“His (foreigners) presence gives Singapore the vibrancy that makes us financially relevant and gives jobs and opportunities to our fellow Singaporeans,” News Asia quoted Singh as saying.
