AHMEDABAD: Due to heavy rain in the last 24 hours in many parts of various districts located in the south and central parts of Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, a flood-like situation has arisen in the low-lying areas. So far 10 thousand 700 people have been rescued and taken to safer places in the state. Eight districts of Gujarat are badly affected by the floods. The worst situation is in the city of Ahmedabad. Here the school-college is closed. Water has entered people’s homes. Ahmedabad has received 486 mm of rain in 7 hours. At the same time, the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in the state in the next 48 hours. Let us inform you that so far 61 people have died in the accident due to rain in the state.
Meanwhile, in view of the flood-like situation in the state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and assured him of all possible assistance from the central government. Shah also said that the Gujarat administration, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are involved in providing quick assistance to the affected people.
According to a government release, 388 roads, including state highways and panchayat roads, were closed due to widespread rain, efforts are on to open them for traffic. It said that 13 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 16 teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are involved in the rescue operation.
According to the statement, 13 dams have been put on ‘high alert’ and eight on ‘alert’ as their water level has increased due to heavy rains. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain at isolated places over South Gujarat and torrential rains in Central Gujarat and Saurashtra during the next five days.
Ahmedabad received 219 mm of rainfall on Sunday night, causing water logging in several residential areas and on underpasses and roads. Several areas of the city were submerged in water causing hardship to the commuters. Schools and colleges remained closed in the city on Monday. Heavy rains have affected the Narmada and Chhota Udaipur districts of Central Gujarat and Surat, Tapi and Valsad in South Gujarat. Around 10 people were rescued from a village in Valsad district who were trapped due to floods in the Auranga river. Revenue officer Madhavi Misri gave this information.
According to Misri, around 1000 people were evacuated from different rain-affected areas in Valsad and 15 were rescued, five of them from an urban area. In the last 24 hours till 6 am, 549 mm of rainfall was received in Bodeli taluka and 432 mm in Kwant taluka in Chhota Udaipur district, due to which water entered many areas. The High and Heran rivers are in spate in the district, causing flooding in low-lying areas. According to an official, 5245 people were evacuated from the flood-affected areas and over 350 were rescued.
