Tragedy During Festive Gathering
A major tragedy struck the Ashok Dham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district early Monday morning, leaving seven women dead and over a dozen others injured. Tens of thousands of pilgrims, including numerous Kanwariyas, had assembled at the shrine at dawn to offer Jalabhishek (ritual water offering) to Lord Shiva on the auspicious occasion of Nag Panchami and the third Monday of the Shravan month.
Sequence of Events and Panic Triggers
The incident occurred along the primary pedestrian approach leading from the Ashok Dham railway station to the temple grounds. According to local officials, crowd numbers swelled dramatically between 6:30 AM and 6:45 AM following the consecutive arrival of two passenger trains, which brought a massive influx of devotees to the station.
The situation deteriorated rapidly when rumors spread through the packed crowd that an electric utility pole and live overhead wires, which had reportedly fallen during the previous night, were carrying an active electrical current. The fear of electrocution caused a sudden rush as pilgrims attempted to flee the narrow corridor.
Under the extreme physical force of the moving crowd, a side barricade collapsed, causing people to lose their footing and fall over one another. The ensuing crush left several devotees trapped beneath the moving crowd.
Emergency Response and Hospitalization
Police units and district administrative teams arrived promptly at the scene to disperse the bottleneck, control the crowd, and initiate rescue efforts.
The deceased and injured were transported to the nearby Sadar Hospital. Medical teams were placed on high alert to treat the injured, several of whom sustained fractures and blunt-force trauma from the crush.
Administrative Statements and Investigation
Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar noted that security and crowd arrangements had been planned, but the sudden train-driven surge overwhelmed specific transit points. “The crowd grew significantly within a fifteen-minute window. Due to the intense pressure, a perimeter barricade gave way, leading to people falling over each other. Quick-response teams were immediately dispatched to secure the area,” the District Magistrate reported.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Shivam Kumar confirmed the casualties and outlined the preliminary findings. “Seven deaths have been recorded, all female devotees. While witness accounts point to a fallen pole and electrocution panic, the exact sequence of events is under thorough administrative and police investigation.”
Authorities have ordered a safety review of the transit corridor and crowd-control barriers to prevent similar occurrences during the remaining weeks of the pilgrimage season.
