A significant chapter in Karnataka’s political history was written on Saturday evening when D.K. Shivakumar was unanimously elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party, clearing his path to become the state’s 24th Chief Minister. The development ended weeks of intense speculation and internal deliberation within the Karnataka Congress, bringing clarity to a leadership transition that had gripped the state’s political landscape.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who resigned from the top post on May 28, played a defining role in the transition by personally proposing Shivakumar’s name during the CLP meeting. Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara seconded the proposal, and it was passed with the unanimous support of all Congress MLAs present. Before the vote, all legislators had collectively passed a resolution delegating the final decision on leadership to the party’s central command.

Venugopal Confirms Swearing-in Date

Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, who served as observer for the meeting alongside Randeep Singh Surjewala, formally announced Shivakumar’s election to the media. He confirmed that Shivakumar would proceed to the Raj Bhavan to stake his claim to form the government, and that the swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister and his Cabinet would be held on the evening of June 3 at the Glass House within the Lok Bhavan complex.

Cabinet Reshuffle on the Cards

The leadership change is expected to be accompanied by significant reshuffling of the state Cabinet. According to sources, up to 10 sitting ministers could be dropped from the incoming Cabinet, with the names of sons of both Siddaramaiah and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge reportedly figuring in that list. The new Cabinet structure may also see the appointment of as many as four Deputy Chief Ministers, a move that would reflect the diverse coalition of interests within the Karnataka Congress.

Who is D.K. Shivakumar?

D.K. Shivakumar was born in 1962 in Kanakapura, near Bengaluru, into the Vokkaliga community, one of Karnataka’s most influential communities politically. He currently represents the Kanakapura constituency as an MLA and has built a formidable reputation within the Congress party as a crisis manager, particularly for his ability to prevent legislative defections during periods of political turbulence. He is widely regarded as the organizational backbone of Karnataka Congress, skilled at managing the financial and logistical demands of elections and political operations.

Shivakumar is among the wealthiest politicians in the country, with declared assets exceeding ₹1,413 crore, spanning business interests in real estate, mining, and hospitality.
