Puducherry is witnessing a historic moment today as N. Rangasamy, the founder of the All India NR Congress (AINRC), prepares to take the oath of office and secrecy at 9:47 AM. The ceremony, held at the Lok Niwas, will be presided over by Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan. This landmark fifth term follows the May 4 election results, in which the NDA alliance successfully retained power by securing 16 seats in the region, later rising to 18 with allied support.
The induction proceedings are expected to be a high-profile affair. CM Rangasamy, along with BJP National President Nitin Nabin and other senior leaders, will lead a celebratory roadshow from the airport to the Lok Bhavan, signaling a strong start for the new administration.
A Transformed Political Map in 2026
The 2026 Assembly elections have drastically reshaped the political landscape across India. While the NDA solidified its hold in Puducherry, the Bharatiya Janata Party achieved a historic milestone by capturing power in West Bengal for the first time since independence, winning 207 seats. In Assam, the BJP has secured a third consecutive term with 102 seats.
In contrast, neighboring Tamil Nadu faces a day of high drama. Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, whose party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest entity, is set to prove his majority in a floor test today. Meanwhile, in Kerala, the political tide has turned as the Congress-led UDF unseated the incumbent Leftist government, though internal deliberations over the Chief Ministerial post continue.
The Rise of the “People’s CM”
N. Rangasamy’s journey to his fifth term is a testament to his enduring popularity. A lawyer by profession, Rangasamy is widely recognized for his humble, “man of the people” persona. His political career took a pivotal turn in 2008 when he resigned from the Congress Party due to internal friction.
In February 2011, he launched the AINRC and led it to an immediate victory in the assembly polls. In the current assembly, the AINRC holds 12 seats, the BJP has four, while the AIADMK and the Lachiya Jannayaga Katchi (LJK) each hold one seat, providing the coalition with a stable majority of 18 in the 30-member house. Today’s ceremony not only marks a personal achievement for Rangasamy but also reinforces the NDA’s growing influence in the southern territories.
