Agra: A devastating road accident in Agra’s Nagla Budhi area near the Central Hindi Institute under New Agra police station jurisdiction claimed five lives and left two others critically injured on Friday night, around 8:30 PM. The speeding Tata Nexon SUV lost control and ran over a group of people standing by the roadside, causing instant fatalities and widespread panic in the locality.
Chain of Destruction: Bike, Divider, Then Pedestrians
According to police officials, the high-speed Tata Nexon SUV first collided with a two-wheeler, then smashed into the road divider before completely losing control. After hitting the divider, the vehicle veered off the road and plowed into a group of people standing on the roadside. The SUV then crashed into a wall and somersaulted twice, leaving the vehicle completely mangled with shattered windows, crushed headlights, and extensive damage to multiple parts.
Eyewitnesses described hearing a deafening crash that brought them rushing to the scene. One witness told reporters, “I was sitting in my shop when I heard a loud noise. When we rushed out, we saw several people trapped under the car. We pulled them out, but they were in very critical condition”.
Victims Identified, Families Devastated
All five deceased victims have been identified by authorities as Babli (33), Bhanu Pratap (25), Kamal (23), Krishna (20), and Bantesh (21). Among the victims, Bhanu Pratap worked as a food delivery agent for Zomato. The injured, identified as Rahul and Golu, were immediately rushed to Sarojini Naidu Medical College for emergency treatment and remain in critical condition.
ACP New Agra, Sheshmani Upadhyay, confirmed the tragic details: “Five people, including four men and one woman, were brought to SN Medical College in critical condition. However, doctors declared all five dead on arrival. A case has been registered based on complaints from the victims’ families”.
Pintu, brother of deceased Babli, recounted the horror: “A vehicle like a Thar came at high speed and ran over everyone. Then it hit the divider. My sister and many others died on the spot”.
Angry Mob Thrashes Driver Before Police Arrest
Following the deadly crash, enraged local residents pulled the driver, identified as Anshu Gupta from Agra’s Dayalbagh locality, out of the wrecked vehicle and beat him before police could intervene. Authorities quickly arrived at the scene, rescued the driver from the mob, and took him into custody. Police have seized the SUV and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
Preliminary investigations suggest the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol, and authorities are conducting tests to confirm this suspicion. Police are also examining CCTV footage from the area to determine the exact sequence of events and the vehicle’s speed at the time of impact.
Chief Minister Expresses Grief, Orders Swift Action
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed profound grief over the tragic incident and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He has directed district officials to ensure that the injured receive the best possible medical treatment and that families of the deceased receive all necessary assistance and support.
Following the accident, a heavy police deployment was arranged at the scene to control the gathering crowd and maintain law and order. Police officials have appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

Authorities have registered a case and are conducting a thorough investigation to determine all contributing factors to this horrific accident. The focus includes examining whether the driver was intoxicated, the vehicle’s speed, mechanical failures, and road conditions at the time of the crash.
