New Delhi: India’s biggest automaker Maruti Suzuki is officially entering the electric vehicle (EV) segment with the unveiling of its first battery electric SUV, the Maruti e-Vitara. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will personally flag off the new model on August 26, 2025, from the company’s Hansalpur plant near Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
This SUV carries major strategic importance as it will not only serve the Indian market but also be exported to more than 100 nations, including top markets like Japan and Europe.
“Make in India” Milestone with Global Reach
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the launch of Maruti’s first global battery electric vehicle (BEV) from Indian soil marks a new chapter in Make in India.
“This achievement will transform India into Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles, with the e-Vitara as the first model to be produced and exported at such a large scale,” the PMO said in its statement.
Battery Plant and Assembly Line Inauguration
Along with the EV launch, PM Modi will also inaugurate:
- TDS Lithium-ion Battery Plant: Local production of hybrid battery electrodes to boost India’s EV ecosystem.
- Dedicated EV Assembly Line: Hansalpur facility gets a specialized line for mass electric SUV production.
This move is expected to reduce import dependency for vital EV components and make India more competitive in the global EV supply chain.
Range, Safety & Variants: What the e-Vitara Offers
Maruti’s first electric SUV comes with strong specs and promises, showcased earlier this year at the India Mobility Global Expo 2025:
- Range: 500+ km per charge on advanced lithium-ion battery pack.
- Safety: 7 airbags standard, ABS with EBD, ESP, and traction control.
- Design: Derived from the Maruti eVX Concept (2023), with tri-slash LED DRLs, curved wheel arch, futuristic grille, and Swift-inspired rear C-pillar handle.

- Wireless Charging for Smartphones
- Heated ORVMs (Outside Rear-View Mirrors)

Who Will It Compete With?
The e-Vitara enters India’s fast-evolving EV SUV segment, where competition is heating up. It will directly rival:
- Hyundai Creta EV (launched earlier this year)
- Tata Curvv EV
- MG ZS EV facelift
- Kia’s upcoming compact EV SUV
With Maruti’s trusted brand recall and nationwide service network, analysts expect the e-Vitara to grab a huge market share in the Rs 15–20 lakh EV SUV segment.
With the launch of the Maruti e-Vitara, Suzuki is not just introducing a car it is turning India into its global EV hub. The SUV’s combination of range, safety, features, and exports strategy will set the tone for Maruti’s aggressive push into electric mobility.
The official launch on August 26 is expected to be a landmark moment for India’s automobile industry and a big push for Atmanirbhar Bharat in EV manufacturing.
