Ahemdabad: Four people died in the incidents caused by Cyclone Tauktae in Gujarat and caused major destruction on the west coast of the state. India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that cyclone ‘Toute’ has weakened after hitting the Gujarat coast between Diu and Una in the Saurashtra region at midnight on Monday. It passed through the Gujarat coast as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ and gradually weakened.

IMD said that there was a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ in Saurashtra region near Amreli on Tuesday morning. Officials said that despite the weakening of the cyclonic storm, it has caused huge destruction. At the same time, in Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Patan and Valsad, one person lost his life in the accidents during the storm. The department said in the morning bulletin that due to the cyclonic storm located 10 km south of Amreli and about 95 km north-northeast of Diu, the wind speed decreased from 150 to 175 kmph and the wind 135 km. Started running at an hourly pace. IMD said that it is projected to move north-northeast and gradually weaken during the next three hours.

“Due to cyclonic storms, Gujarat and Saurashtra are expected to receive light to moderate rains on Tuesday,” the department said. So far four people have been confirmed dead in the state.

An official of the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) said that three people died due to heavy rains and strong winds, falling walls at different places. The dead include one person each from Rajkot, Valsad and Bhavnagar. All the three districts are among the most affected districts in the state due to cyclonic storms.

An official of the Patan A-division police station said that due to strong winds on Monday night, an electric pole fell on a woman sleeping in Patan, causing her death. Many coastal areas in Gujarat did not have electricity. At the same time, due to the strong winds, many trees, electric poles and mobile towers also fell.
