Amritsar: Late-night panic gripped Amritsar after two unidentified youths riding a motorcycle hurled a grenade at the Thakurdwara Temple in the city’s Khandwala area around 12:35 am on Saturday, March 15, 2025. The shocking incident was captured clearly on CCTV cameras installed near the temple premises.
In the CCTV footage obtained by police, two young men are seen arriving outside the temple on a motorcycle, briefly stopping to throw an object later confirmed as a grenade towards the temple before quickly fleeing the scene. Moments later, a powerful explosion rocked the temple premises, causing widespread panic among local residents.
At the time of the attack, the temple priest was sleeping inside but miraculously escaped unharmed. However, the blast caused significant damage to parts of the temple structure. Police teams swiftly reached the site and secured the area for investigation. Authorities are closely examining CCTV footage to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Khalistani sympathizers or anti-social elements aiming to disrupt communal harmony may be behind this attack. Punjab Police have assured swift action and vowed to arrest the accused at the earliest.
Violence at Golden Temple:
Meanwhile, in another disturbing incident earlier on Friday afternoon, violence erupted within Amritsar’s revered Golden Temple complex. An attacker identified as Zulfan from Yamunanagar in Haryana assaulted five people including two sewadars (temple attendants) and three devotees with an iron rod inside Guru Ramdas Sarai near the community kitchen area.
The sudden attack left one Sikh youth from Bathinda critically injured with severe head trauma; he is currently undergoing intensive treatment at Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research. Four other injured individuals received prompt medical care and remain stable.
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) employees and devotees bravely intervened, overpowering Zulfan and his accomplice before handing them over to police custody. Authorities revealed that Zulfan had conducted reconnaissance prior to executing his violent act. Police have registered a case under relevant sections and are investigating further to uncover possible motives and conspiracies behind these attacks.
Both incidents have heightened security concerns across Amritsar, prompting authorities to intensify vigilance and patrols throughout sensitive areas of the city. Punjab Police have appealed for calm while assuring residents of strict action against those attempting to disturb peace and communal harmony.
