Jaipur: The Rajasthan High Court has provided a significant reprieve to Asaram Bapu, the self-styled godman serving a life sentence for sexual assault on his disciple. In a landmark decision, the court has granted him a seven-day interim parole for medical treatment. This marks the first time Asaram will step out of jail on parole.
Health Deterioration Prompts Parole
Asaram Bapu’s health has taken a sudden turn for the worse while incarcerated at Jodhpur Central Jail. Complaining of chest pain, he was transferred to AIIMS Jodhpur for medical evaluation. Unfortunately, his condition did not improve despite thorough examination. As news of his deteriorating health spread, a crowd of supporters gathered outside the hospital.
Last Year’s Setback and Legal Battle
In June 2023, Asaram Bapu sought a 20-day parole from the District Parole Committee, which was subsequently denied. Undeterred, he appealed to the High Court, but relief remained elusive. Now, with the recent parole approval, Asaram has a chance to receive medical attention in Maharashtra.
POCSO Conviction and Imprisonment
Asaram’s legal troubles stem from his conviction by the special POCSO court in Jodhpur. In 2018, he was found guilty of raping a minor girl at his ashram. Since September 2, 2013, he has been behind bars. The victim had alleged that on the night of August 15, 2013, Asaram called her to his Manai ashram near Jodhpur and assaulted her. After a protracted trial lasting over five years, the POCSO court handed down a life sentence to the controversial godman.
