New Delhi: Bishan Singh Bedi, one of the greatest spin bowlers in the history of cricket, passed away on Monday at the age of 77. He had been suffering from various health issues for a long time and breathed his last in New Delhi.
Bedi was a part of the famous Indian spin quartet that dominated world cricket in the 60s and 70s. Along with Erapalli Prasanna, Srinivas Venkataraghavan, and Bhagwat Chandrashekhar, he formed a formidable bowling attack that troubled even the best batsmen of that era. He was known for his accuracy, variations, and flight.
Bedi played 67 test matches for India from 1966 to 1979, taking 266 wickets at an average of 28.71. He also captained India in 22 test matches, winning six and losing 11. He was born on 25 September 1946 in Amritsar, Punjab. He made his test debut against West Indies in Kolkata in 1966 and took his first wicket in his second over.
Bedi was also a mentor and coach to many young spinners who followed his footsteps. He was the manager of the Indian cricket team for some time in 1990 during the tour of New Zealand and England. He also served as a national selector and a commentator. He was outspoken and vocal about the issues affecting the game of cricket.
Bedi’s demise has left a huge void in the cricket fraternity and the nation. Many prominent personalities, including India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, have expressed their condolences and paid tribute to him. He will be remembered as one of the finest cricketers and gentlemen that India has ever produced.
