‘Jawaan’ beats ‘Pathaan’ and other Bollywood films, but fails to catch up with ‘Dangal’

Mumbai: ‘Jawaan’, the latest film of Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, is continuing its successful run at the box office. The film, which was released on September 7, has broken several records and emerged as one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time. Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Jawaan’ has surpassed his own film ‘Pathaan’, which was released earlier this year and collected around Rs 1,050 crore worldwide. The film ‘Pathaan’, directed by Siddharth Anand, was also a blockbuster hit and featured Shahrukh Khan in a spy thriller.

‘Jawaan’ is a patriotic action drama, in which Shahrukh Khan plays the role of an army officer who leads a covert mission to rescue Indian hostages from a terrorist group. The film also stars Katrina Kaif, Vicky Kaushal, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in pivotal roles. The film is directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who is known for his successful films like ‘3 Idiots’, ‘PK’, and ‘Sanju’.

‘Jawaan’ is behind only ‘Dangal’ The only film that is ahead of Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Jawaan’ in terms of worldwide box office collection is Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’, which earned around Rs 2024 crore globally. ‘Dangal’ was a biographical sports drama, based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta and Babita, who won medals for India at the Commonwealth Games. The film was released in 2016 and became a huge sensation in India and China.

Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Jawaan’ has also defeated Sunny Deol’s recent film ‘Gadar 2’, which was a sequel to the 2001 blockbuster ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’. ‘Gadar 2’ featured Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel reprising their roles as Tara Singh and Sakina, who face new challenges in their married life after the partition of India. The film was released on August 15 and had a good opening, but failed to sustain its momentum at the box office. ‘Gadar 2’ has been able to make a global collection of Rs 686 crore in 51 days.

Shahrukh Khan has become the first Bollywood actor whose two films have made a box office collection of more than Rs 1,000 crore in the same year. He has proved his star power and versatility once again with his films Pathaan’ and ‘Jawaan’. He is also working on his next project, which is a sci-fi film titled ‘Zero’, directed by Anand L Rai. The film will feature Shahrukh Khan as a dwarf, who falls in love with a superstar played by Anushka Sharma. The film is expected to be released in December this year.
