New Delhi: IPS Praveen Sood has been appointed as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of 2 years. He will take charge on May 25 in place of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal. The committee headed by PM Modi had shortlisted three names for the CBI chief, out of which the name of IPS Praveen Sood was finalized. IPS officer Praveen Sood is currently serving as the DGP of Karnataka.

The Department of Personnel and Training said in an order that the approval of the competent authority is conveyed for the appointment of Praveen Sood as CBI Director for two years after the completion of the tenure of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal.

3 names were under consideration for the post of CBI chief
Earlier on Saturday evening, a high-level meeting was held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of Supreme Court Justice DVE Chandrachud, and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary. According to sources, three senior IPS officers were selected for the post of CBI Director in the meeting.

Praveen Sood is a 1986 batch IPS officer. His name was already being told at the forefront of the race for the post of CBI director. Praveen Sood has been the DGP of Karnataka. Along with him, the committee had also shortlisted the names of Madhya Pradesh DGP Sudhir Kumar Saxena and Director General of Fire Services, Civil Defense, and Home Guard Taj Hasan.

The CBI Director is selected by a committee consisting of the Prime Minister, the CJI, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for a fixed term of two years. Their tenure can be extended up to five years. Sources said that during the meeting, possible candidates for the appointment of new Central Vigilance Commissioner and Lokpal member were also discussed.
