Jakarta (Indonesia): A strong earthquake shook parts of Indonesia’s main island Java and the tourist island of Bali on Friday, triggering panic. However, there was no immediate news of any major loss of life or property.
The US Geological Survey Institute said the epicenter was 96.5 kilometers north of the coastal city of Tuban on East Java island at a depth of 594 kilometers and had a magnitude of 7.0.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency said there was no tsunami threat but warned of aftershocks.
The agency says the primary magnitude of the earthquake was 6.6. However, differences in initial calculations are common. Videos that surfaced on social media showed houses and buildings in Yogyakarta, Central Java, shaking for several seconds and people running out of them in fear.
