The tsunami caused major devastation in Japan after a nine-magnitude earthquake on 11 March 2011. Many cities were ruined due to this and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was also damaged. The disaster killed more than 18,000 people and displaced nearly half a million people.
10 years of tragedy
It has been 10 years since the tragedy but 40,000 people have still not been able to return to their homes around Fukushima. The disaster caused radiation to spread as the nuclear plant was affected. Naruhito, while paying tribute to those killed in the disaster, said that after this many lives were changed, many people became unemployed.
Residents paid tribute
The emperor said that he is deeply saddened, especially for those who live around Fukushima. Dozens of residents in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Province, paid tribute to more than 3,000 people. Around 40 workers were killed in Ostucci city. His family also gathered at one place to pay homage. No one was directly killed by the radiation, but around 2.4 percent of the land near the Fukushima nuclear plant was declared a contraband area where people could not move.
