New Delhi: The Central Election Commission has announced elections for 12 Rajya Sabha seats across nine states, including Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Telangana, and Odisha. Notably, Maharashtra will witness elections for two vacant seats following the resignations of BJP members Piyush Goyal and Udayan Raje Bhosale. Goyal and Bhosale recently won the Lok Sabha elections on BJP tickets.

Election Schedule and Key Dates

According to the Election Commission’s schedule:

  • Notification Issuance: August 14
  • Nomination Filing Deadline: August 21
  • Scrutiny of Nominations: August 22
  • Withdrawal of Nominations:
  • Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tripura: August 26
  • Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan, Telangana, Odisha: August 27
  • Voting and Results: September 3, with results to be declared at 5 PM the same day.

Tenure and Vacant Seats

The newly elected Rajya Sabha members will serve until 2028. The seats became vacant due to various reasons:

  • Maharashtra: Resignation of Piyush Goyal and Chhatrapati Udayan Raje Bhosale
  • Telangana: Keshavrao
  • Odisha: Mamta Mohanta

Additionally, seats vacated by outgoing members who were elected to the Lok Sabha include:

  • Madhya Pradesh: Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia
  • Rajasthan: KC Venugopal
  • Tripura: Biplab Dev
  • Assam: Kamakhya Prasad Tasha and Sarbananda Sonowal
  • Bihar: Misa Bharti and Vivek Thakur
  • Haryana: Deepender Hooda
