New Delhi: The political atmosphere in India has intensified after the recent arrest of Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, over his alleged involvement in the Delhi liquor scam. The situation has drawn international attention, with the US State Department making remarks that have been met with strong disapproval from the Indian government. The Ministry of External Affairs has taken a firm stance by summoning the US Deputy Ambassador to India, Gloria Berbena, emphasizing the importance of non-interference in domestic affairs.

US State Department’s Remarks on Kejriwal’s Arrest Stir Controversy

The arrest of Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has become a point of contention between India and the United States. The US State Department’s comments on the incident have been perceived as intrusive, prompting India to assert its right to manage internal legal matters independently. The Ministry of External Affairs has issued a statement condemning any foreign commentary on India’s judicial processes, underscoring the expectation of respect for sovereignty, especially among democratic nations.

Enforcement Directorate Accuses Kejriwal of Being Scam Mastermind

The ED has accused Kejriwal of being the central figure in the Delhi Excise Policy scam, alleging that he orchestrated a scheme to benefit certain individuals through the policy. According to the ED’s remand application, Kejriwal is said to have demanded bribes from liquor businessmen in return for favors. Furthermore, the ED claims that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Kejriwal, financed its Goa Assembly election campaign with funds derived from the scam.

Alleged Connections and Communications in the Excise Scam

In a supplementary complaint, the ED has detailed Kejriwal’s alleged interactions with key figures in the scam. He is said to have communicated with Sameer Mahendru, one of the main accused, instructing him to collaborate with co-accused Vijay Nair. Kejriwal reportedly referred to Nair as “his boy,” indicating a close association. Nair, previously the communication in-charge for the AAP, is implicated in the ongoing investigation into the excise policy irregularities.

As the country navigates this challenging period, the integrity of its democratic processes remains under scrutiny from both national and international observers.
