New Delhi: The political feud that began during the Lok Sabha elections over the Constitution has now escalated to accusations of disrespecting the national anthem in the first parliamentary session of Modi Government 3.0. At the heart of the controversy is a 25-second video clip featuring BJP MP Om Birla, who has been elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second consecutive term. Congress has seized upon this clip to accuse Birla of insulting the national anthem.

A Controversial Start to the Session

On the fourth day of the first monsoon session of the 18th Lok Sabha, President Draupadi Murmu addressed a joint session of both houses. Before her address, the national anthem was played in the House, with all members standing and singing in unison. Congress has posted a video clip from this moment, alleging that Om Birla’s actions during the anthem were disrespectful.

The Video That Sparked the Outrage

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinet shared a video clip on the social media platform ‘X’, highlighting the moment before the President’s address. In the 25-second video, as the tune of the national anthem plays, members, including the President, stand and sing the anthem. Om Birla is seen moving from behind the Speaker’s chair to a standing position at attention, joining in the singing of the anthem. This action has been interpreted by Congress as an affront to the national anthem.

Congress’ Accusation

Supriya Shrinet, in her post accompanying the video, accused Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla of disrespecting the national anthem. She wrote, “Speaker Sir, you should stand where you are during the national anthem. What you did is a gross insult to the national anthem.”

Social Media Backlash and Political Ramifications

After Shrinet’s post, the video quickly went viral, with many users sharing and commenting on it. Despite the uproar, there has been no response from Om Birla or any BJP leaders regarding these allegations. The incident has, however, set the stage for heightened political tensions as the Congress and BJP lock horns over the issue.

This controversy adds to the already charged atmosphere in the parliamentary session, with both parties gearing up for what promises to be a contentious period of political maneuvering and debate.
