New Delhi: The second phase of mandatory hallmarking of gold jewelry and artifacts will start next month i.e. June 1 in the interest of customers. Hallmarking of gold is proof of the purity of this expensive metal. This was voluntary till 16 June 2021, after which the central government decided to implement mandatory hallmarking of gold in a phased manner. In the first phase, 256 districts of the country including Mumbai were brought under its ambit. After initial difficulties, now the hallmarking process has gained momentum.
At the same time, this year on Akshaya Tritiya, a total of 25 tonnes of gold is expected to be sold in the country with a 10 to 15 percent increase in the sale of gold and gold ornaments. In the year 2019, about 22 tonnes of gold were sold on Akshaya Tritiya.
Hallmarking of 20, 23, and 24 carats will also be done
In addition to 3 additional carats (20, 23, and 24 carats) of gold jewelry in the second phase of mandatory hallmarking, 32 new districts will come under the ambit of the first phase, where an ‘Assay and Hallmark Center (AHC)’ has been set up. . The Central Government has notified an order in this regard and it will come into force from June 1, 2022.
Hallmarking on 3 lakh jewelry per day
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) successfully implemented mandatory hallmarking of gold in 256 districts of the country with effect from June 23, 2021, where more than 3 lakh gold jewelry with Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) is being hallmarked every day. Under a provision of BIS, a normal consumer can also get the purity of gold jewelry checked at an AHC recognized by BIS.
