Kolkata: Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, breathed his last today at his residence in Kolkata’s Ballygunge. He was 80 years old. The news was confirmed by his family and the state unit secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), Mohammad Salim.
A Life of Service and Struggle
Bhattacharjee served as Bengal’s Chief Minister from 2000 to 2011 and was a veteran communist party leader. His tenure was marked by significant challenges, including demonstrations over land acquisition for industries led by Mamata Banerjee, who eventually ended the Left’s 34-year rule in Bengal.
Battling Health Issues
In recent years, Bhattacharjee battled age-related ailments, which kept him away from public life. He had been hospitalized several times due to health complications. Despite his illness, he remained committed to his political ideology and became influential in West Bengal’s political landscape.
