In fact, the central government has changed the very definition of broadband connectivity. The central government has increased the speed of broadband in India. Telecom users will have to pay for the minimum speed of 2 Mbps instead of 512 Kbps. Which is more than four times the proposed minimum speed. Every telecom operator is bound to provide at least 2 Mbps speed to its customers on their broadband connection. The government of India’s rule of 2 Mbps speed has come into force with immediate effect. Now telecom companies will have to provide a minimum of 2 Mbps speed for broadband. At present, the minimum download speed has been fixed at 512 Kbps.
85 crore broadband subscribers
According to a notification released on January 25, there are about 850 million broadband subscribers in India. Of these, 825 million use mobile broadband. Not only this, 25 million people have access to landline broadband. Now companies will have to increase broadband speed. TRAI had recommended increasing the speed. TRAI had recommended increasing the speed in 2013 and 2021. As per the recommendations of TRAI, the DoT has prescribed a minimum speed of 2 Mbps for the companies. According to Speedtest Global Index data, India’s internet speed has increased in December 2022. Yet it is ranked 79th globally. Mobile download speed in the country has increased from 18.26 Mbps to 25.29 Mbps.
According to the latest data on the broadband market, in November 2022, the share of companies in the country’s broadband market was 98.4%. These companies include Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL. Talking about the big companies of India’s telecom sector, the names of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea come first. In addition, broadband services are provided by state-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).
