Film financier Yusuf Lakdawala died in jail, was arrested by ED

Mumbai: Film financier and builder Yusuf Lakdawala died on Thursday at Arthur Road Jail in central Mumbai. Lakdawala was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case related to the land deal. A jail official gave this information. According to the official, Lakdawala (76) was brought dead at JJ Hospital and his death was announced around 12 noon. However, the cause of his death could not be ascertained.

The real cause of Lakdawala’s death would be known only after the post-mortem, the official said. According to sources, Lakdawala was suffering from cancer. A case of accidental death has been registered, the official said. The ED had arrested Lakdawala in May in a money laundering case related to the land deal. He was accused of forging documents to buy land worth Rs 50 crore in Khandala, a tourist hub in the Pune district. He was in jail in judicial custody.

The ED had last month opposed Lakdawala’s bail plea on medical grounds.
