
New Delhi: The Bar Council of India on Friday informed the Supreme Court that it is making new rules to prevent lawyers from going on strike and boycotting the court. BCI said that with this, action has also been proposed against bar associations violating these rules and advocates promoting strikes through social media.
BCI chairman and senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra told a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and MR Shah that it has convened a meeting with all bar councils in this regard. We are making rules to stop strikes and boycotts. Rules are also being prepared to punish the members of the Bar Association to prevent them from going on strike without any valid reason. Last time the bench had sought the help of the BCI president to deal with the issue of lawyers’ strike.

The bench was hearing a suo motu case to deal with the issue. Appreciating the stand taken by the BCI, the bench adjourned the matter for further hearing as the Bar Council of India is already considering the matter.
In its order, the bench said, “Manan Kumar Mishra, who is also the chairman of BCI, has informed the court that there was a delay in compliance with the earlier directions due to the onset of the pandemic.” He has told that a meeting has been called by the BCI with all the Bar Councils. BCI proposes to make rules to reduce strikes by advocates, proposes action against violating bar associations, and proposes action against advocates promoting strikes on social media.
