Key Highlights

  • Re-exam Date: Sunday, June 21, 2026.
  • Admit Cards: Scheduled for release by June 14, 2026.
  • Time Extension: Candidates will receive an additional 15 minutes to compensate for OMR formalities.
  • No Extra Costs: No additional fees will be charged for the 2.2 million registered candidates.
  • Future Shift: NEET-UG to transition fully to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) starting in 2027.

In a high-level press conference, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan confirmed that the re-examination for NEET-UG 2026, the country’s largest medical entrance exam, is set for June 21. The decision comes as a move to safeguard the merit of millions of aspiring doctors after widespread concerns regarding the integrity of the initial test.

To ensure a smooth transition for the 2.2 million students, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has outlined a clear timeline. Admit cards will be available for download by June 14, and students will be given the flexibility to choose their preferred examination centers one week before the test date. The Minister emphasized that the government will provide comprehensive transit arrangements to assist students in reaching their centers on the day of the exam. Importantly, the re-test will be conducted at no additional cost to the applicants.

New Provisions: 15-Minute Buffer for OMR Formalities

One of the significant updates for the June 21 exam is the adjustment of the testing window. After receiving feedback that the mandatory signing of OMR sheets at both the start and end of the session was eating into valuable solving time, the NTA has officially extended the duration.

While the core exam remains scheduled from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, candidates will now be granted an additional 15 minutes. This change is designed to ensure that administrative procedures do not penalize students’ performance, allowing them the full three hours specifically for attempting questions.

Zero-Tolerance for the “Paper Leak Mafia”

The Education Minister took a stern stance against the irregularities that prompted the re-exam. A zero-tolerance policy is now in effect, with the investigation officially handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“The integrity of our education system is being challenged,” Pradhan stated, adding that the “paper leak mafia” will be brought to justice before the June 21 exam date. The CBI has already initiated a deep-dive investigation to uncover the root of the irregularities. The Minister expressed deep concern for the mental stress caused to students but maintained that the re-examination was a “difficult yet necessary decision in the best interest of the nation.”

Looking Ahead: The Shift to Computer-Based Testing

In a landmark policy shift, the Ministry announced that NEET-UG 2026 will be the final year the exam relies heavily on the traditional OMR format. Citing OMR-related vulnerabilities as the primary catalyst for recent issues, Minister Pradhan announced that starting in 2027, the NEET-UG will transition to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode.

This modernization aims to eliminate the manual handling of paper-based answers and streamline the evaluation process, mirroring the digital transition already seen in major exams like the JEE. For the current cycle, candidates are urged to follow only official NTA channels for further updates and to ignore misinformation circulating on social media.
