The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released its comprehensive “Crime in India 2024” report on Wednesday, offering a detailed look at the country’s evolving security landscape. While overall murder rates and crimes against women showed a slight national decline, the data reveal a concerning surge in the vulnerability of the elderly and children, particularly in urban centers.
In Delhi, the statistics paint a grim picture for vulnerable populations. The capital remains the most unsafe metropolitan city for women for the fourth consecutive year, recording 13,396 cases, a figure virtually unchanged from 2023. The city also recorded 1,058 rape cases, more than double those of Mumbai and Jaipur. Furthermore, Delhi topped the list for crimes against senior citizens among 19 megacities, with a crime rate of 110 per 100,000 population, significantly higher than the national average.
Surge in Crimes Against the Elderly and Children
While national crimes against women dropped by 1.5% to 441,534 cases, the report highlights a “drastic surge” in offenses targeting senior citizens. A total of 32,602 cases were registered nationwide, marking a 16.9% increase from the previous year.
Top States for Crimes Against the Elderly (2023, 2024)
| Rank | State | 2024 Cases | 2023 Cases | Trend |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Madhya Pradesh | 5,875 | 5,738 | Increase |
| 2 | Maharashtra | 4,918 | 5,115 | Decrease |
| 3 | Karnataka | 4,247 | 1,840 | Sharp Increase |
| 4 | Telangana | 2,907 | 2,150 | Increase |
| 5 | Tamil Nadu | 1,898 | 2,104 | Decrease |
Similarly, crimes against children rose by 5.9%, totaling 187,702 cases. Maharashtra leads the country in this category, followed closely by Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Kidnapping and offenses under the POCSO Act remain the primary drivers of these statistics.
The Digital Frontier: Cybercrime and Urban Fatality Rates
The 2024 report marks the first time cybercrime cases in India have exceeded the 100,000 mark. A total of 101,928 cases were registered, an 17.9% increase that reflects the growing complexity of digital threats. Bengaluru remains the nation’s cyber capital, reporting a staggering 17,561 cases, far outpacing Mumbai (4,939) and Hyderabad (4,009).
Interestingly, the report identified a unique trend in the National Capital Region. Ghaziabad, despite its smaller population, reported 479 cybercrime cases, surpassing Delhi’s 404 cases. Delhi has seen a consistent decline in recorded cybercrime since 2022, a trend officials attribute to improved preventive measures and a shift in reporting patterns.
Beyond digital safety, the report also underscored the physical dangers of urban life. Among 19 metropolitan cities, Delhi recorded the highest number of fatalities from road accidents. Of the 2,000 incidents reported in the capital, 1,658 resulted in deaths, highlighting a critical need for enhanced traffic safety and infrastructure.
