In a strategic move to capture the rapidly evolving quick commerce sector, Amazon India on Monday announced a massive nationwide expansion of its ultra-fast delivery service, Amazon Now. The e-commerce giant aims to establish a presence in 100 cities, moving beyond its current operations in major hubs like Delhi, NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to tap into growing demand in Tier 1 and Tier 2 markets.

This expansion signals Amazon’s intent to compete directly with local players like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Zepto, shifting its focus from traditional same-day or next-day deliveries to near-instant fulfilment. Harsh Goyal, Vice President of Everyday Essentials at Amazon India, noted that the company has accelerated its growth strategy following exceptional customer feedback and a tripling in shopping frequency among Prime members who use the service.

Strengthening Logistics with 1,000 Micro Fulfillment Centers

The backbone of this scale, up, is a significant investment in hyperlocal infrastructure. Amazon plans to increase its network from 300 to over 1,000 micro fulfilment centers (MFCs). These specialized units are designed to store high-demand items closer to residential clusters, ensuring that thousands of products, including fresh perishables and household staples, can reach customers within minutes.

The ₹2,800 crore investment will not only power this logistics expansion but will also be funneled into technology and associate well-being. Amazon highlighted that a portion of the funds is dedicated to the safety, health, and financial security of its fulfillment and delivery partners, ensuring the network remains resilient during the rapid rollout.

Empowering 16,000 Farmers Through Direct Sourcing

A pivotal facet of the Amazon Now expansion is its focus on the “farm, to, fork” supply chain. By connecting more than 16,000 farmers directly to its platform, Amazon aims to ensure the highest quality of fresh produce. This direct sourcing model allows farmers to leverage Amazon’s technology and logistics to sell their goods directly to consumers through platform sellers, bypassing traditional intermediaries and improving profit margins for rural producers.

Beyond groceries, the service will offer a curated selection of personal care products, fashion and beauty items, small home appliances, and pet supplies.

Strategic Context: The $35 Billion Commitment

This push is part of Amazon’s broader commitment to invest $35 billion in India by 2030. As the quick commerce war intensifies, Amazon is positioning itself as a comprehensive delivery partner, offering a spectrum of speeds: minutes for daily essentials, same-day for over a million items, and next-day for four million additional products.

As cities like Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Jaipur prepare for the launch, the 100-city rollout is expected to redefine consumer expectations in the Indian e-commerce landscape, making rapid delivery a nationwide standard rather than a metro privilege.
