Key Points
- Market Milestone: Kia is the first in its segment to offer both a 6-speed diesel automatic and a 7-speed turbo-petrol DCT for under Rs 10 lakh.
- Pricing Breakdown: The Diesel 6AT starts at Rs 9.78 lakh (HTE(O) variant), while the Turbo Petrol 7DCT begins at Rs 9.90 lakh (HTK(O) variant).
- Urban Focus: The expansion addresses the surging demand for automatic transmissions among city drivers facing increasing traffic congestion.
- New Aesthetics: The Model Year 2026 (MY26) update introduces a vibrant “Magma Red” exterior color to the lineup.
In a strategic move to dominate the highly competitive sub-4-meter SUV market, Kia India has launched the Model Year 2026 (MY26) edition of the Sonet. This latest update significantly lowers the barrier to entry for advanced automatic transmissions, a category that has traditionally been reserved for premium, high-priced trims. By introducing these options in mid and entry-level variants, Kia is directly addressing the needs of budget-conscious consumers who prioritize driving comfort in India’s increasingly congested urban environments.
The headline of this launch is the pricing of the new powertrains. The 1.5-litre diesel engine, paired with a 6-speed torque converter automatic, now starts at an industry-leading Rs 9.78 lakh for the HTE(O) trim. Simultaneously, the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT) is now available from the HTK(O) variant, priced at Rs 9.90 lakh. These price points represent a massive reduction in the starting price for automatic variants, making them roughly Rs 1.7 lakh to Rs 2.25 lakh more affordable than previous iterations.
Strategic Response to Rising Traffic Congestion
The decision to expand the automatic lineup is backed by shifting consumer data. Atul Sood, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Kia India, noted that the company has observed a clear trend toward automatic mobility. As metro cities deal with stop-and-go traffic, the physical fatigue of manual gear shifting has become a significant pain point for commuters.
By filling the gap between manual and high-end automatic trims, Kia aims to capture buyers who previously settled for manual transmissions due to budget constraints. The Sonet now offers one of the widest ranges of transmission choices in its class, including the 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual), 6-speed torque converter, and the performance-oriented 7-speed DCT.
Features, Safety, and Design Enhancements
Beyond the mechanical updates, the 2026 Sonet continues to set benchmarks for interior technology and safety. The SUV recently crossed the 5-lakh sales milestone in India, a testament to its popularity. The MY26 version maintains its reputation as a feature-rich “smart” SUV, offering:
- Advanced Safety: 15 standard safety features across all trims, including 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC).
- Level 1 ADAS: Higher variants come equipped with 10 autonomous features such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist and Lane Keeping Assist.
- Connectivity: The cabin features a 10.25-inch touchscreen with over 70 connected car features and an immersive 7-speaker Bose sound system.
Adding to the visual appeal, Kia has introduced the “Magma Red” paint scheme, designed to give the SUV a more youthful and bold presence on the road. This joins the existing palette of colors like Pewter, Olive, and Imperial Blue. With this aggressive pricing and feature-heavy strategy, the 2026 Kia Sonet is well-positioned to challenge rivals like the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and the newly launched Skoda Kylaq.
