Ahmedabad: After a significant lull, Gujarat has reported 15 new cases of COVID-19, all attributed to the JN.1 sub-variant of Omicron. Health authorities have emphasized that the new cases are mild and manageable, and there is no cause for alarm among the public.

Most Cases in Ahmedabad, Linked to Omicron JN.1

According to Dr. Neelam Patel, Additional Director (Public Health), 13 of the new cases have been detected in Ahmedabad city, with one each in Rajkot and Ahmedabad rural. The JN.1 variant, a sub-lineage of Omicron first identified in August 2023, is known for its high transmissibility but generally causes less severe illness.

All Patients Recovering at Home

Health officials confirmed that all 15 patients are being treated in home isolation. None have required hospitalization, and all are under regular medical supervision. “This variant is not a cause for major concern at this time,” Dr. Patel stated. “Our hospitals have dedicated COVID-19 wards ready, but there is currently no need to use them.”

International Travel Link Identified

Authorities revealed that at least one of the new cases had a recent travel history to Singapore. Dr. Patel explained that recent surges in COVID-19 cases in countries like China, Thailand, and Singapore have contributed to the spread of the virus through international travel. “It is natural for the infection to enter India as people move between countries,” she noted.

Public Urged to Remain Cautious

Officials have reassured residents that the situation is under control but have advised continued caution. People experiencing symptoms such as cough or cold are encouraged to stay home and avoid public places to prevent further spread. Dr. Patel reiterated, “There is no need to panic. We just need to be careful and follow basic health guidelines.”

Ready but Not Alarmed

Gujarat’s hospitals remain prepared with separate COVID-19 wards should the need arise, but the current situation does not warrant their use. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and remain vigilant for any changes in the severity or spread of the virus.
