New Delhi: The Indian car market witnessed a strong demand for SUVs and MPVs in October 2023, as many new models were launched and festive offers were rolled out by various manufacturers. However, one of the most popular SUVs in the country, the Hyundai Creta, faced tough competition from its rivals, especially the Mahindra Scorpio, which surpassed it in sales and rankings.
According to the Times of India, the Hyundai Creta sold 13,077 units in October 2023, which was more than the 12,717 units sold in September 2023, but it slipped from the ninth position to the tenth position in the list of top 10 best-selling cars and SUVs in October 2023. The Mahindra Scorpio, on the other hand, sold 13,578 units in October 2023, which was more than the 12,000 units sold in September 2023, and it climbed from the tenth position to the ninth position in the list. The Mahindra Scorpio includes two variants – the Scorpio Classic and the Scorpio-N, which cater to different segments of the SUV market.
The Hyundai Creta, which was launched in 2015, has been one of the most successful models for the Korean carmaker in India, as it offers a spacious cabin, a refined engine, a smooth ride, and a premium feel. The Creta is available with two engine options – a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel, both of which come with manual and automatic transmission options. The Creta competes with other compact SUVs like the Kia Seltos, the Nissan Kicks, and the Renault Duster.
The Mahindra Scorpio, which was launched in 2002, has been one of the most iconic models for the Indian carmaker, as it offers a rugged design, a powerful engine, a 4-wheel drive option, and an off-road capability. The Scorpio is available with two engine options – a 2.2-litre diesel and a 2.0-litre petrol, both of which come with manual and automatic transmission options. The Scorpio Classic competes with other monocoque compact SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, while the Scorpio-N competes with other ladder-frame mid-size SUVs like the Tata Harrier, the Tata Safari, and the Hyundai Alcazar.

The sales figures of October 2023 indicate that the Indian car buyers are looking for more variety and value in the SUV segment, and are not loyal to any particular brand or model. The Hyundai Creta, which has been dominating the segment for a long time, may have to face more challenges from the Mahindra Scorpio and other new entrants in the future.
