The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 5 km, which amplified its impact.

The tremors lasted for several seconds, causing panic among people who rushed out of their homes and offices. Many buildings swayed, windows rattled, and objects fell from shelves. Social media users in India shared videos and photos of the quake, showing ceiling fans and other fixtures shaking violently.

No casualties or major damage have been reported so far, but authorities are assessing the situation and providing relief to the affected areas. The Delhi Police urged people to stay calm and avoid using elevators. They also advised people to move to open spaces and dial 112 for any emergency help.

Strong earthquake jolts

This is the second earthquake to hit Nepal this year, after a 4.5-magnitude quake jolted the western part of the country on May. Nepal is prone to earthquakes as it lies along the boundary of two tectonic plates: the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate. In 2015, a devastating 7.8-magnitude quake killed nearly 9,000 people and destroyed more than half a million homes in Nepal.
