New Delhi: Action has now started on selling gold jewelry without hallmarking in 256 cities of the country. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has started strict action against those holding non-hallmarked gold jewelry. The new Consumer Protection Act 2019 has also been implemented in the country on gold jewelry. Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) officials will be able to take strict action against any trader found selling unmarked jewelry in many big cities of the country. The Union Consumer Ministry had made it mandatory to sell hallmarked jewelry in these 256 cities from June 16 this year. Along with this, jewelers were given the freedom to hallmark the old stock of jewelry till 30 November 2021. Now this grace period is over.

If you sell 18-carat gold by pretending to be 22-carat gold, then jewelers can be fined and jailed. In view of the cheating happening with the customers, the central government has brought new laws only to ensure quality. A Hallmark system for gold jewelry and artifacts has also been implemented in the country. After the implementation of the new consumer law, now it will become more strict to follow the rule of hallmarking.

Buy gold now only after seeing the hallmark
Significantly, with increasing carat, there is a difference in the quality and price of gold jewelry. That is the more carats of gold, the more expensive it will be. While buying gold, customers definitely pay attention to its quality. According to the Union Ministry of Consumer and Food Affairs, ‘Whenever customers go to buy gold, buy gold only after seeing the hallmark. Hallmark is a kind of government guarantee and it is decided by the only agency of the country i.e. Bureau of Indian Standards. The advantage of buying by seeing the hallmark is that whenever you go to sell it in the near future, you will not get a low price, but you will get the true price of gold.
