Self Baggage Drop SBD facility

New Delhi: Self Baggage Drop (SBD) facility has been started at Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport. With the commencement of this service, passengers will get rid of standing in queues for depositing their luggage. Passenger waiting time will also be reduced to 15 to 20 minutes and the check-in process will be much easier and faster. This facility has been started at Terminal-3. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the company that operates IGI, has installed a total of 14 SBD machines, including 12 automatic and two hybrids, for the self-baggage drop.

At present, domestic passengers will be able to use this facility and after getting the necessary approvals, it will be started for international passengers as well. According to the release issued by DIAL, “At present, Indigo passengers will be able to use this facility. Five airlines including Air India, Vistara, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and British Airways are likely to provide SBD service to their passengers in the future.

This is how to use
The process of using the SBD facility will be completed in two phases. Firstly the boarding pass and baggage tag have to be obtained from the self-check-in kiosk. Passengers have to tag their checked baggage. After this, passengers will have to scan their boarding pass near the machine. Also, the passenger has to declare that his baggage does not contain any prohibited/dangerous material. Then the goods have to be kept on the conveyor belt. Once the process is complete, the baggage will be automatically delivered to the destination and then to the aircraft.

The machine will weigh and scan the goods
The SBD machine itself will weigh the goods and scan them. If the weight of the checked baggage exceeds the limit set by the airline, it will not be accepted by the machine. In such a situation, the personnel of the airline will inform the passenger about excess baggage.

Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO, of DIAL said, “DIAL is continuously striving to improve the passenger experience at Delhi airport through digitization and automation initiatives. The self-luggage facility is also aimed at making passengers self-reliant and reducing the time taken for luggage collection.
