Mumbai: A local train heading towards Churchgate ran over three railway workers who were working on the tracks near Mumbai on Monday night, killing them instantly. The workers were part of a team that was repairing a signalling issue that had occurred on the UP slow line between Vasai Road and Naigaon stations.

The Western Railways confirmed the identities of the deceased as Vasu Mitra, chief signalling inspector in Bhayander; Somnath Uttam Lambutre, electrical signalling maintainer; and Sachin Wankhade, helper. All of them belonged to the signalling department of the Mumbai division.

According to a Government Railway Police (GRP) official, the accident took place at 8.55 pm, when the workers failed to notice the approaching train and were crushed under its wheels. The GRP has registered a case of accidental death and is investigating the matter.

The Western Railway authorities expressed their condolences to the bereaved families and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 55,000 each to them. They also ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident to ascertain the cause and prevent such mishaps in the future.
